Firstly the Small Plant Hire web app UI which was focused on adding the final layer of design and usability and the second was the development of a complex custom app for their internal detailing processes.

Small Plant UI

Working with Calder Stewart on their small plant hire application, Firebrand was tasked with adding an additional layer of UI design and UX to their existing web application. The app enables builders, project managers and other staff to view a list of products available to hire from their closest Calder Stewart store, gives details around the correct use and maintenance of the equipment, health and safety compliance, risk assessment pop-ups, pdf downloads, and supporting videos.

With a majority of views coming from on-site at construction sites, a lot of attention was given to ensuring the mobile experience was easy and straightforward, but with this being said - a seamless transition from desktop to mobile has been implemented too.

Detailing App Development

In a global effort to remove paper processes and improve their internal workflow, efficiencies and communications Calder Stewart asked us to create a custom application for the detailing part of their process.

In construction, detailing is the process of taking on and developing a concept design, to make it dimensionally correct and co-ordinated, describing all the main components of the building and how they fit together, down to the very specifics of each material and parts used to build it, yes even down to the screws!

Calder Stewart knows their stuff and their processes are incredibly robust on paper with often really important information being locked away in the heads of some very clever and key staff members. This app will enable further transparency in the process for current and future team members, The dev team provided us with a start on the backend (.NET MVC) and we were tasked with designing and building the front end of the application as well as providing support on completing the backend and database design. It was an enjoyably cohesive partnership.

Working closely with a diverse and specialised team of end users (detailers, finance people, project managers and quantity surveyors) in fast iterations (agile), we used standard technologies (HTML5, CSS3, JS, Bootstrap 4) to tailor a responsive application for their specific needs. The application consists of two main screens:

• The projects/subprojects selection, with integrated search and filtering, that pulls its data from integration with Microsoft AX.

• The detailing screen, allowing to detail a project (integrated with Microsoft AX), track progress, view all relevant project information, generate load lists PDFs and more.

This collaborative project was completed in around 3 months and the feedback so far has been incredibly positive.

Congrats to the team at Calder Stewart, it was a pleasure working with you.
