Otematata is our new favourite place ...

Kate Boreham

This year's Christmas celebration saw us packing our bags and setting off into the great beyond for a weekend away from the bright lights of Dunedin.

Getting back to basics is always refreshing, especially for a team hard wired to computers and technology 24/7 ! With a big year behind us we were all ready to celebrate with a weekend away in beautiful Otematata.

Leaving on a Friday afternoon the office resembled a classroom the day of school camp - sleeping bags, pillows, overnight bags, sunscreen, insect repellent and plenty of essentials such as sausages, chips and tomato sauce. Not to mention a decent supply of beer and wine.

Filling two cars and a van the team, some better halves, and one chihuahua got on the road.

After a leisurely drive we arrived at the Otematata Holiday Park and Lodge - we had the place to ourselves and an extensive choice of rooms to bunk in. Unpacking was followed by an impressive BBQ of sausages, ribs, steak and salmon - Charlie the Chihuahua was pretty excited to be included getting his very own piece of steak.

After a few beers (and wines for the ladies) we unleashed our inner Bear Grylls lighting the open fire ready to hold the annual 'Court Session'. Crimes featured messes in the microwave, and the sentences included consumption of mussels marinated in garlic, reciting a limerick or a shot of Fireball Cinnamon Whisky.

Following up with some very impressive Karaoke renditions it was time to call it a night.

The sun came out on Saturday for an action packed day including brunch, gourmet ice-creams, hot pools, salmon fishing and dinner at the local pub.

Sunday morning featured fresh Salmon for breakfast (from yesterdays catch) and then it was time to hit the road and head home.

The trip was a wonderful weekend of getting back to basics, team activities, great food and sunshine. We couldn't think of a better way to celebrate the year!
